GDC or the Game Developers Conference was the venue where
NVidia announced its 4K Android TV console called the Shield console.
The console is powered by the company’s own Tegra
X1 chip that was announced earlier this year at CES and features 3GB of RAM
and 16GB of internal storage (expandable using a microSD card). NVidia also
bundles the device with its own controller and an optional Bluetooth remote
control that allows users to issue voice commands.
Naturally, the Shield console is able to access various
Google services including YouTube and Google Play. Moreover, the device can
connect to NVidia’s GRID on-demand game service that allows gamers to stream
their favorite titles from the company’s servers.
Ports-wise, the console features a couple of USB ports, an Ethernet
port as well as display and HDMI ports making it easy to connect any type of
display into the device. The console is also capable of delivering 4K content
in contrast to its competitors.
The NVidia Shield console will be available in May for
around $199.
Google’s Android
TV has already been released since June of last year, but manufacturers are
yet to fully utilize its capabilities. That is until today, when Razer
announced the Forge TV at last week’s CES.
The Forge TV is a set top box designed to bring Android
usability to your living room. The box is equipped with a Snapdragon 805 chip
with a 2.5GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in storage. The
device runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop running an Android TV interface.
Internet is delivered to the device by a Gigabit Ethernet
port or Wi-Fi 802.11ac. The box connects to TV sets using an HDMI 1.4 port and
connects to various accessories using a USB 3.0 port or a USB port.
And speaking of accessories, Razer is also launching two
accessories to complement the Forge TV. On one hand we have the Razer Serval –
a Bluetooth controller that doubles as a smartphone gaming accessory through an
adjustable game clip so you can snap on your smartphone for a more immersive
gaming experience.
The controller works with Bluetooth 3.0 for wireless use or through
a microUSB to USB cord that 1.5 meters long for wired gameplay. On the other
hand, there’s the Razer Turret – a lapboard with a gaming mouse designed to be
your primary input device for the Forge TV.
The lapboard features Chiclet style keyboard with
anti-ghosting for up to 10 key presses at the same time. It also packs a number
of dedicated Android buttons, a Cortex quick-launch button as well as a Windows
button. There’s also a pull-out pad on the right that snaps in to place using
magnets.
The mouse is not as good as Razer’s more expensive gaming
mice but keep in mind that this is a keyboard lapboard bundle. Nonetheless, the
Turret’s mouse is more than enough for typical activities in use with Forge TV.
The Razer Turret will be available in the second quarter of
2015 for $130, while the Serval and the Forge TV will retail for $80 and $99.99
respectively.
Finally, there’s the Razer Nabu X, an entry-level smartband
that provides users with social notifications and tracks personal fitness
information. In contrast to the Razer
Nabu, which was unveiled at last year’s CES, the Nabu X doesn’t have an
OLED panel for viewing notifications. Instead, it has three LED indicators that
when matched with vibrations alert users about different notifications.
The device also comes with an accelerometer that provides
activity data for its users. The Nabu X’s band is made from soft-rubber while
the main module has been constructed to be water-resistant. The device will be
available in three different colors – black, white and green and will retail
for $49.99 once it ships this month in the US and Europe.
Earlier today, Microsoft’s Xbox team as well as Electronic
Arts have already made their announcements including new titles from popular
franchises like Assassin’s Creed, Call of Duty and Just Dance. Moreover, Sony’s
keynote is about to finish, so we’ll keep updating our website for other game

Asus’ Republic of Gamers brand of simply known as ROG has
always been a major part of Computex. Last
year, the brand released several products including the Maximus VI Formula
motherboard, the Poseidon Graphics card and a couple of Tytan laptops.
This year, the company announced even more products, which
includes a 4K gaming laptop, two Steam machines, several motherboards and a
number of gaming PC accessories.
Leading the charge of announcements is the GX500. The laptop
is based on the Asus NX500 laptop and packs a 15.6-inch 4K IPS display that can
show 100 percent of the NTSC colour gamut. It also comes with Asus’s
VisualMaster technology, an Intel Core i7 CPU and an Nvidia GeForce 860M
graphics chip.
The laptop has a very thin profile at just 0.75 inches thin
and weighs just 4.9 pounds, making it one of the slimmest gaming laptops in the
market rivalling that of Razer’s Blade,
Maingear’s Pulse
17 and MSI’s GS70.
Thanks to its Nvidia graphics card, the GX500 boasts cool and nifty features that would make any gamer happy including automatic game optimization, ShadowPlay and the ability to automatically record segments of a game so users can later share them on their social networks. It also has Nvidia’s Battery Boost technology that maximizes the laptops 6-cell battery.
The ASUS ROG GX500 is set to ship sometime in Q3 2014 for a
little less than $2000.
Also on ROG’s menu at Computex are the ROG G20 gaming
desktop and the ROG GR8 console gaming PC. The ROG G20 sports an Intel Core i7
processor with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 graphics that is housed in a
12.5-liter case, making it an ideal solution for those with big gaming needs
but have small spaces.
The G20’s ventilation system takes advantage of natural
convection in order to cool the entire machine. The computer’s case uses a
thermal design with a hidden airflow tunnel that accounts for the G20’s efficient
heat management and low operating noise. ROG and Asus has also made the gaming
desktop extremely power efficient which only consumes 20W in Eco Energy mode.

Design-wise the computer’s case sports a sophisticated
design, Mayan stencilling and customizable lighting effects that shows up to 8
million colours across three different zones. Moreover the G20 also comes
equipped with Asus’s Aegis application that helps users monitor system
performance through a very gamer-friendly interface.
Then there’s the ROG GR8 console gaming PC which will support
SteamOS. The machine will be powered by an Intel Core i7 processor coupled with
Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 750Ti GPU. It will also have SupremeFX audio output,
support for UHD graphics and Gigabit Ethernet networking.
ROG has also baked in a built-in Miracast receiver and WiDi
3.5 that allows the GR8 to mirror and stream content from supported Android
smartphones and tablets as well as Windows 8.1 devices.
