Here are a few of the top titles that were revealed during
the event.
Microsoft’s E3 keynote is teeming with announcements of game
titles for its Xbox One gaming console. Not to be outclassed by its rival, Sony
has also started with the numerous game announcements that’s meant for its
consoles – the PlayStation 4 and the PS Vita.
If you’re a fan of Sony’s gaming machines, here are some of
the games you can expect to be available for your consoles.
PLANET SIDE 2

Sony’s much awaited PlayStation 4 just hit the shelves last
Saturday in the United States and Canada and it looks like the company has a
reason to be happy as its newest gaming console has sold over 1 million units
during its first 24 hours.
The console is set to hit Europe in a couple of weeks and by
that time it might even come close to the Nintendo Wii U month to date sale
figures of around 3.9 million even surpassing it towards the last parts of the
year.
However, the release of the PS4 isn’t all perfect. For
starters, there was some issue with the PlayStation Network bogging down due to
the surge in PS4 logons during the launch. This resulted in a number of users
unable to download the essential first-day update as well as download games or
play online.
There were even a select number of consumers that
experienced a “blue light of death” that rendered their consoles dead on
arrival. But then again, having the title of seeling over a million on its first
24 hours is still quite a feat and it remains a question how its main rival –
the Xbox One would fair once it is released.
The Xbox One is scheduled to go on sale this month so we’ll
just have to wait a few more days before to see if Microsoft’s vision of the
future of gaming would outshine that of Sony’s.
Sony has announced this week that it will be shipping the next-generation
PS Vita by October 10th.
The PS Vita PCH-2000 is said to be 15 percent lighter, 20
percent thinner and runs an hour longer than its predecessor. The console will
initially be sold in Japan for around $190 (Wi-Fi only) and will be available
in a number of colour options including black, blue, grey, lime green and
yellow.
The package will include a micro-USB charger and 1GB of
on-board storage. The new PS Vita will also have a LCD screen instead of an
OLED display, which probably explains its more affordable price compared to the
original PS Vita.
Sony will also be slashing the prices of its memory cards.
From 4GB to 32GB, their prices will be reduced to $15 and $68 respectively.
Moreover, the company will soon offer a 64GB Vita card for around $105.
As for the original PS Vita, the OLED Wi-Fi model will be
bundled with a new “Play! Game Pack”, which comes with pre-installed games and
a memory card. Sony says it plans to discontinue the OLED Wi-Fi model while the
3G/Wi-Fi OLED model will soon be included in similar discount bundles.
Sony also unveiled the PlayStation Vita TV – a set-top box
that provides users with access to a range of entertainment service and
PlayStation 4 cross-functionality.
For around $100, the PS Vita TV will provide access to Sony’s
Music Unlimited, Video Unlimited Service and karaoke to name a few. Other
services ready for the box include Twitter, Hulu and NicoNico Douga, with even
more media providers signing up to offer their services in the future.
Moreover, the PS Vita TV will allow users to connect to a PS
4 for remote play, acting as a secondary terminal for gaming in case the main
TV currently attached to the console is not available.
In terms of ports and other connectivity options, the PS
Vita TV will include an HDMI output, space for a Vita memory card, a slot for
Vita games, and other ports (USB, power, Ethernet).
The past two weeks have been quite a rollercoaster ride for
Sony and the gaming world. For starters, a lot of gamers we’re very happy about
the announcement of the PlayStation 4 at E3 two weeks ago. However, the
positive vibe was cut short when a number of PS3 users experienced a problem
last week that rendered their machines unusable.

Today
Sony said that they are already aware of the problem and has
taken down the firmware update that caused the issue. The good news is that
Sony has announced that they will soon release an update that will restore the
bricked devices. The bad news is that this update won’t come until Thursday.
This news was somewhat of a disappointment given the fact
that the update that caused the problem was a simple yet poorly made one.
Nevertheless, what happened with the PS3 can be a double-edged sword that can
either have positive or negative effects on Sony’s gaming console business.
On the one hand, the most obvious effect is a negative one
with gamers at the losing end of the line because they are left with unusable
devices for a considerable amount of time. But on the other hand, Sony can use
this time to entice more gamers to make the switch to the more up-to-date PS4.
The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) may have ended last
week but the news it made last week are still reverberating across the tech
space this week. Just today, two major updates on two of the biggest names in
the gaming world were announced that carried both good and bad news to gamers
all around the globe.
MICROSOFT and the XBOX ONE
First one up is Microsoft and its about face decision on the
Xbox One’s highly controversial policies. According to an official blog post by
Microsoft’s president of interactive entertainment Don Mattrick, the company
will be revoking its previous policy on check-ins and trading of used games.
From Mattrick’s post, Microsoft has confirmed that the Xbox
One will only require a one-time connection during setup. Uses will now be able
to play disc based games without ever connecting online again. There will be no
24-hour connection requirement and users will be able to take their machines
anywhere they want just like the Xbox 360.

2013 – Microsoft Xbox
Microsoft will also be lifting the limitations when it comes
to using and sharing games. Users will no longer be required to only share a
game to Xbox Live connections that have been in their network for at least 30
days. Moreover, the company will be lifting regional restrictions (DRM) allowing
importers and travellers who are residing in areas outside of Xbox One’s
supported countries to still enjoy the console.
The trade-off though is that some cloud-based gaming
capabilities will be rendered useless without the 24-hour check in requirement.
These include cloud-saving, access to an online games library and a family
sharing feature.
SONY and the PLAYSTATION 3
Meanwhile, Sony is also having some issues on their side of
the fence. A recent firmware update to the PlayStation 3 has caused some
consoles to stop working.
According to the PlayStation support forums, the problem was
caused by firmware update version 4.45 which lets the users choose to enable or
disable in-game notifications whenever they earn a trophy.
Sony on the other hand has announced that they are aware of
the issue and claims that only a small number of people experienced the
problem. At present, Sony has already taken the firmware update offline and is
already investigating the issue. The company has promised to fix the problem as
soon as possible with another update. For those users who have bricked their
PS3, they can still implement the update once it becomes available by going in
to safe mode.
The PlayStation 4 has made quite a lot of news in recent
months even when nobody has seen the actual console yet. But this week at E3,
Sony has finally showed the world its newest gaming console, showcasing the
device’s hardware design and providing additional information about the system.
Sony’s next-generation platform will launch for around $399
this holiday season. The external design of the system is subdivided into four
sections. The power indicator rests at the top of the device and gives off a “PlayStation”
blue color whenever the machine is turned on. The foreside and backside of the
device is slightly angled which allows users to gain access to the power button
and disc slot when the console is placed either horizontally or vertically as
well as help conceal connected cables.

2013 – Microsoft Xbox
PS4 peripherals include the stand-alone Wireless controller
(DualShock 4) and the PlayStation camera (PS4 eye) which will both be available
for $59 at launch. The PS4 will sport a single-chip eight-core AMD Jaguar
custom low power APU with a Radeon-based graphics engine, 8GB of RAM and a
Blu-ray optical disc drive.

However, unlike Microsoft, Sony is imposing less restriction with the PS4 in terms of use of second hand games and internet connectivity requirement.
Aside from its main attraction at E3, Sony also unveiled new
details about PS Plus, its paid PlayStation Network subscription service.
PlayStation Plus now offers single membership which lets gamers enjoy all of
the program’s benefits across the PS4, PS3 and PS Vita systems. Benefits of the
program include exclusive game discounts, cloud game saves, early access to
beta programs and content, and access to the Instant Game Collection.
The Instant Game Collection provides gamers with immediate
access to a library of games – including blockbuster hits, innovative indie
games, and classic titles which will extend to the gamers on the PS4 system
along with online gameplay, ensuring that gamers always have a selection of
games to discover and enjoy with other members of the community.
Moreover, Sony will offer the #Driveclub PS Plus Edition to
PS Plus members which delivers all the authenticity and immersion users would
expect from the full #Driveclub experience in the Instant Game Collection.
Furthermore, one digital title will be rotated each month.
Lastly, Sony announced that it will be providing cloud
gaming services by 2014 starting in the United States. The cloud gaming
services will provide users of the PS4 and PS3 systems (support for PS Vita to
follow shortly) immediate access to a catalog of critically acclaimed titles.
