Those who are looking for tons of storage in their system must definitely consider Seagate’s Archive line of hard disk drives. This week, the company announced a new 8TB model that will be sold for just $260.


The drive uses Shingled Magnetic Recording (SRM) technology that allows for more data to be stored using the same space as traditional 3.5-inch HDDs. It also consumes less power and features Seagate’s on-demand, time-to-ready PowerChoice technology. Moreover, the drive can be equipped with Self-Encrypting drive options for secure data storage and retirement.

Seagate is offering the drive in three different capacities – 8GB, 6TB and 5TB. According to reports, shipments have already reached distributors so it’s only a matter of time before we see these massive drives hit the shelves at the local mall.

Biometric scanners, specifically fingerprint scanning technology have long been implemented by laptop manufacturers such as Lenovo and HP into their enterprise-level offerings. But this kind of tech isn’t really that observable in consumer products until its implementation on the Apple iPhone and iPad.


And so now, it looks like fingerprint readers may soon be a standard feature on future laptop models courtesy of a US-based tech company by the name of Synaptics. Its SecurePad is a mash up between a traditional track pad and a fingerprint sensor, and uses the FIDO Unified Authentication Framework.

According to the company, SecurePad will be able to read a user’s fingerprint at any angle, much like that of Apple’s TouchID. They also add that all data that is transmitted to and from the sensor and the host processor are fully encrypted to ensure that your “personal” information won’t be compromised.

SecurePad is now available, so we just need to wait for manufacturers to adopt it.

Alienware’s 13-inch gaming laptop and its Area 51 Mac Pro competitor are going on sale starting this week.

The Alienware Area 51 was already unveiled back in August and features a powerhouse of components including Intel’s newest Core i7 processors, a slew of GPUs either from AMD or Nvidia, 8GB of RAM, (8GB-32GB SSD), a 2TB spinning hard drive and a slot-loading DVD burner. But of course, as this is intended as a gaming product, the list of upgrades and options is extensive in order to suit each customer’s needs.


If you’re looking for something more portable, then try looking at the Alienware 13 gaming laptop. It comes with a dual-core Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, 720p (non-touch) display, 1TB spinning hard disk and a 2GB Nvidia GeForce 860 GPU. Those who need more oomph can upgrade to a Full HD non-touch display, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD.

The Area 51 gaming desktop PC will sell for around $1,699 for the base model while the Alienware 13 will retail starting at $999.


The company also announced today its $300 graphics amplifier. This device connects to the Alienware 13 laptop and enables it to get desktop-grade graphics when a GPU is docked in it. The device also comes with a number of USB ports so users can connect other gaming peripherals such as a mouse, keyboard, headset, etc. for that immersive gaming experience.

 The amplifier uses a proprietary PCI-e cable that is is only compatible with the Alienware 13, though the company stated that future models will also have this port.

Compared to desktop PCs and laptops, the Apple MacBook Air usually has a smaller storage capacity making it a bit difficult to work with when you’re someone who stores a lot of media files and documents. And although you can use external disk drives to augment the built-in storage in the MacBook, you still need to lug them around if you’re planning to use them.

Aside from its typical gaming machines and motherboards, Asus’s Republic of Gamers (ROG) also debuted new gaming accessories that help give users the most immersive experience during each game.

The first product is the ROG Swift PG278Q monitor. At 27-inches diagonal, the ROG Swift offers incredibly high quality display with a WQHD resolution (2560 x 1440 pixels) which is can support Nvidia’s G-sync technology that provides smooth and crisp images.


The monitor is able to synchronize with the machine’s GPU to render graphics quickly and smoothly. It has a refresh rate of 144Hz and a response time of just 1ms. There’s also a dedicated Turbo key that lets users choose which refresh rate to use in one click, eliminating the need to manually adjust the monitor’s on-screen display settings.

Accompanying the ROG Swift is the GK2000 gaming keyboard and Gladius gaming mouse. The GK2000 features mechanical Cherry MX red switches, customizable keys, built-in anti-ghosting technology which ensures accuracy and responsiveness.


Meanwhile, the ROG Gladius gaming mouse which features smooth-touch material that’s very comfortable to a user’s hand. The mouse also comes with a DPI switch, programmable buttons and side-mounted switches.

The Gladius has a 6400dpi optical sensor that’s capable of tracking up to 200 inches per second and 50G acceleration. The mouse also has an exclusive socket design that lets users adjust their ideal click resistance as well as a removable cable design that makes it easy to pack the device during transport.

Graphics cards are an integral part of any PC owner who has a specific need for rich graphics. With this PC component, gamers are able to play graphics-intense games on their machines without having to worry about stuttering or video lag and those involved in graphic artists are able to use these cards to help them create and edit complex designs.

For the most part of their existence, graphics cards are mostly used for handling the display component of a PC, but recent innovations have made the video card more than just an article that helps a PC get better visuals. 


Card makers have developed a new chip architecture that allows the CPU and GPU to function as co-processors. Dubbed as Heterogeneous architecture, this technology will allow the GPU to lighten the workload of the CPU by taking in some of the processes done by the CPU in order to boost performance.

AMD’s newly released Radeon R9 270x is one such product that packs HSA technology. But does it truly deliver the type of performance that AMD’s Heterogeneous architecture promises or is just a gimmick?

Here’s our quick review of the AMD Radeon R9 270x to help clear things out.

BUILD AND DESIGN

The AMD Radeon R9 series was designed with AMD’s Graphics Core Next architecture (GCN) that promises blistering performance and breath-taking image quality making it a top choice for gamers and those involved in special effects.


So of course, the hardware design of the R9 series reflects the type of performance it brings to the table. The demo unit we reviewed was the one originally from AMD and features a more discrete design in contrast to those customized by other manufacturers such as Asus, MSI and Gigabyte.

The entire unit is enclosed in a single block of plastic casing with red accents. There’s a small red cooling fan at one end of the card while the other end is where the various video ports are located (2 DVI ports, 1 HDMI port and 1 display port), while the underside of the R9 reveals part of the board where the card’s various components are installed.



INSTALLATION

The Radeon R9 is quite a chunky graphics card with dimensions measuring 24cm long, 3cm high and around 10cm wide, so its installation may prove quite challenging to some users, especially those who have very limited space in their PC case.


The card connects to the motherboard via a PCI-express slot and uses two 6-pin PCI-express power cables. The Radeon R9 270x should come with a 6-pin adapter to go with the 4-pin power cables that come with most power supply units. (Installation Tip: Make sure the card you bought comes with the PCI-e cables because they are very hard to find and rather expensive – around $8 a piece).


The graphics card occupies two slots at the back of your PC case so make sure you have enough space. Otherwise, you will need to reorganize existing components of your rig to make room for the card.

Once installed, the only thing left to do is install the drivers meant for the R9 and it should work without any hiccups. Just do note that you need to disable the built-in graphics card in order for the card to work.

PERFORMANCE

I’m not really a hardcore gamer so obviously, I didn’t have the arsenal of graphics-intense games on hand to test the performance of the R9. So instead, I used 3D Mark 11 benchmarking app to test the power of the R9 270x.


But before that, I tried to compare the Windows Experience Index score for graphics before and after installing the R9 to get a general idea of how much power does the card bring in to a system. The results show an increase in WEI score for graphics performance by as much as 200%.


On the other hand, 3D Mark 11 scores are at around 7000+ for graphics, 1000+ for physics score and a frame rate that ranges from 20-50 fps. And based on Futuremark’s database of benchmark scores, this puts the R9 right in the middle of the top graphics cards from both AMD and Nvidia.

FINAL WORDS

AMD has always been a trusted brand when it comes to PCs thanks to its legacy of bringing top notch PC components into the market that are usually placed in a more competitive price in contrast to its competitors.

The Radeon R9 270x is of course not an exception. The card has a price tag of around $200 (approx. 10,000PHP) and yet it brings in the kind of performance that are found in even higher spec’d graphics cards. Although the overall dimensions of the R9 was quite big, I do realize that the extra power needs some room to breathe so I guess it’s alright.

Installation was also quite easy and almost a plug and play affair, which makes it convenient to use even for first time rig-makers.

All in all the AMD Radeon R9 270x makes for a compelling choice for anyone who’s into serious gaming, heavy graphic design or video editing especially if you don’t mind paying its above average price tag.
