Alienware’s 13-inch gaming laptop and its Area 51 Mac Pro competitor are going on sale starting this week.

The Alienware Area 51 was already unveiled back in August and features a powerhouse of components including Intel’s newest Core i7 processors, a slew of GPUs either from AMD or Nvidia, 8GB of RAM, (8GB-32GB SSD), a 2TB spinning hard drive and a slot-loading DVD burner. But of course, as this is intended as a gaming product, the list of upgrades and options is extensive in order to suit each customer’s needs.

If you’re looking for something more portable, then try looking at the Alienware 13 gaming laptop. It comes with a dual-core Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, 720p (non-touch) display, 1TB spinning hard disk and a 2GB Nvidia GeForce 860 GPU. Those who need more oomph can upgrade to a Full HD non-touch display, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD.

The Area 51 gaming desktop PC will sell for around $1,699 for the base model while the Alienware 13 will retail starting at $999.

The company also announced today its $300 graphics amplifier. This device connects to the Alienware 13 laptop and enables it to get desktop-grade graphics when a GPU is docked in it. The device also comes with a number of USB ports so users can connect other gaming peripherals such as a mouse, keyboard, headset, etc. for that immersive gaming experience.

The amplifier uses a proprietary PCI-e cable that is is only compatible with the Alienware 13, though the company stated that future models will also have this port.

Long-time gaming PC heavy weight Alienware is giving Apple’s Mac Pro a run for its money in terms of hardware design.

Sporting the so-called Triad-chassis the 2014 version of the Alienware Area 51 promises optimized thermal management and ergonomics. The new desktop PC also comes with grips that make it easy for users to pivot the entire system in case you want to perform any upgrades or connect any peripherals.

The triangular design also keeps the machine properly ventilated allowing cool air to enter the device while expelling hot air at the same time.

Under the hood, the Area-51 can be equipped with either a 6-core or 8-core Intel Core i7 processor that can be factory overclocked with an X99 Express chipset. There’s also 32GB of DDR4 memory (in quad-channel). Users can also take advantage of having both a solid state drive and a spinning hard drive.

Lastly, Alienware’s Command Center 4.0 allows users to fine tune their systems through a suite of overclocking controls, a monitoring app called Adrenaline that gives users detailed information about the various components of the PC (including CPU, memory, graphics card and network adapter) and AlienFX that controls the device’s lighting zones.

Alienware hasn’t revealed any pricing or shipping information yet but it’s undeniable that the Area-51 brings something different into the table making it quite a desirable piece of gaming equipment.

Dell’s gaming arm – Alienware also made some news this week at E3 as it announced its latest and most powerful gaming laptops, the Alienware 14, 17 and 18 which are designed with different types of gamers in mind. For instance, the Alienware 14 was designed for the enthusiast gamer who requires a machine that provides enough gaming performance and yet is handy enough for day-to-day use.

The Alienware 17 on the other hand is built to showcase immersive and graphics-intensive games with the latest technologies for desktop-grade performance while the Alienware 18 will be of course designed for the more hard-core of gamers.

All three models feature a new, iconic and angular design that was lifted from jet engines and stealth bombers and is constructed from anodised aluminium and magnesium alloy body. According to Alienware, over 60% of the main mechanical components of the laptops were made from various metals that add to the machines’ durability.

Moreover, the laptops were built using customer feedback. The new Alienware 14 now sports an anti-glare LCD display with wide viewing angles for reflection-free gaming in nearly any lighting condition, including a premium Full HD panel option with IPS. The Alienware 17 on the other hand has an optional 3D panel for an immersive visual experience, while the Alienware 18 sports a full HD display with PLS wide viewing-angle technology.

The laptops also feature a number of components including a full voltage, quad-core 4th generation Intel Core i7 processor (Haswell processor), Nvidia GeForce 700 series graphics, DDR3L memory, and support up to four storage drives. The Alienware 18 will feature Nvidia SLI dual graphics technology as standard and will offer an overclocked CPU option with a maximum speed of 4.3GHz. All three models will sport Ethernet technology by Qualcomm’s Killer networks, Klipsch speakers and Dolby Home Theatre v4 audio.

Alienware has also updated their Command Center software which provides intuitive, user-friendly access to company-exclusive applications and controls under one centralized hub. The Command Center includes the exclusive AlienFx lighting control system which allows users to create their own custom lighting themes and special effects.

The new devices have up to 20 colors to choose from across 10 different lighting zones, which totals to over 10 trillion lighting combinations. Furthermore, the company has worked with a number of game developers to incorporate this lighting system to over 60 game titles.
