Chipmaker Nvidia is reportedly working on a compact tablet that will bear the “Shield” branding.

According to a document filed at the Global Certification Forume or GCF (a specific body that provides certification for companies that manufactures products with 3G technologies) the slate will be marketed as the SHIELD tablet.

Previous rumours have indicated that the tablet might have a 7.9-inch display with the company’s new Tegra K1 processor. And unlike Nvidia’s current slate, the Tegra Note 7, the Shield tablet will most likely be targeting gamers. In fact, there have been speculations that Nvidia will bundle the tablet with gaming accessories similar to those of Razer’s Edge.

At the moment, there’s very little information about this alleged Shield Tablet but there's already a placeholder in Nvidia's TegraZone webpage, so we’ll just have to wait and see for more announcements from Nvidia.

Nvidia’s Shield portable gaming console is one of the members of the gaming world’s minority that is trying to bridge mobile gaming with traditional PC or console gaming.

Today, the device gets a new update that will improve the ability of the console to stream games from different sources in various resolutions. For starters, the Console mode has been tweaked for better performance in 720p resolutions and more importantly, the device is now able to support gaming in 1080p resolution, at 60fps.

With the added support for full HD resolution, a number of new games can now be streamed in 1080p including Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Batman: Arkham Origins, Battlefield 4, BioShock Infinite, Borderlands 2, Crysis 3 and the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Nvidia says it will add more games to this list on a weekly basis.

Lastly, Shield’s Gamepad Mapper will now recognize gyroscope and motion-based controls in addition to the touchscreen commands that were supported during the last update.

California-based GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) manufacturer Nvidia has unveiled its most powerful mobile GPU yet – the Kepler Mobile chip. The announcement was made shortly after the company’s annual Investor Day conference in Santa Clara, California.

The company’s chief executive Jen-Hsun Huang demonstrated the power of the new chip by comparing a footage of Battlefield 3 played on an iPad 4 and on a device powered by the new GPU. According to Huang, the new Kepler chip will be capable of playing high-end PC games on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.

The Kepler’s performance utilizes three components namely the SMX (streaming multiprocessor extreme architecture), Dynamic Parallelism and Hyper-Q which increases the chips performance per watt compared to its predecessor.

Huang even went so far as to call the current iPad’s graphical capabilities as vintage 1999.He also added that the company wanted to get multiple years ahead of their competition and that all their sacrifices were worth it. The company also confirmed that the release of their hand held gaming console Project Shield was still on schedule for Q2 2013 which will also be the device that will most likely feature the new Kepler GPU.
