Sony’s has definitely beefed up its Alpha line these past
couple of months with various additions to the range including its top-spec’d A7
line. And now the company is extending the experience to more
budget-challenged customer with the Alpha 5100.
The camera is meant to be the replacement of Sony’s NEX-5T
from the company’s previous ILC line and is almost identical to the Alpha
6000 ILC that was announced last February at CP+.
The A5100 comes with the same 24.3MP APS-C sized Exmor CMOS
sensor with Sony’s latest Bionz X image processor. It also comes with the same
Hybrid AF system in the A6000 including its 179-phase detection points.
However, unlike the A6000, this camera doesn’t have an
electronic viewfinder, but what you do get is a 921k-dot display with touch
functionality that can flip 180 degrees in case you fancy doing a selfie with
this ILC.
The camera also comes with built-in Wi-Fi and NFC, and is
capable of recording XAVC S video at up to ISO 25600. Sony will be offering the
A5100 starting next month for around $700 with a 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 power-zoom
kit lens.
The Nikon 1 S2 is the newest member of the company’s 1
S-series ILC and features a 14.2MP CMOS sensor with no low-pass filter and comes
equipped with an Expeed 4A image-processing engine and an ISO range of
200-12800.
Just like other members of the 1-series, the S2 offers
blistering autofocus speeds thanks to its hybrid AF System featuring 135 focus
points with 73 phase-detection points delivering shooting speeds of up to 20
frames per second with continuous autofocus and up to 60 frames per second for
fixed focus.
The device also comes with an F-button that provides users with instant access to the camera’s
feature menu making it easy and convenient to make quick changes to its
settings. Nikon is also marketing the S2 as a camera system for beginners, most
specifically Instagram users by adding several studio quality filters into the mix.

including black, white, red and yellow. It will be available starting June for
$449.95 and will be bundled with an 11-27.5mm f/3.5-5.6 lens.
German camera and optics manufacturer Leica has teamed up
with another German big hitter – Audi to build a camera model to commemorate
Leica’s 100th anniversary.
The model T will be the company’s mid-range camera, and is
placed in between the Leica S- and M-series, and the lower end X range. The
body of the T series is built from a single block of aluminium milled and
polished for several hours.
The camera features a 16MP APS-C sized sensor from Sony and
comes equipped with built-in Wi-Fi connectivity and a dedicated app that will
allow users to use their smartphones and tablets to remotely control the
device. The T-series also features a different mount in contrast to other
cameras in the company’s product range.
Fortunately, Leica is also producing an adapter for lenses
built for the M-series and will cost around $395. At the top of the device sits
two dials meant for exposure settings and programmable functions. There’s also
a touchscreen at the back that features a touch-friendly and intuitive UI similar
to that of smartphones.
The T-series also features a unique camera strap
co-developed with German automaker Audi. Unlike other strap from other compact
camera systems from other mirrorless cameras, those used in the T-series doesn’t
need to be buckled or tied. Instead, it comes with a clickable strap mechanism
with interchangeable coloured straps.
Of course, bearing the Leica brand, the T-series will be
insanely priced. The body alone of the camera will reportedly cost $1850. The
camera is now available for pre-order and will start shipping sometime in May.
Leica will also be offering two lenses for the T-series. First will be an
18-56mm zoom lens, while the other will be a 23mm prime lens and will be priced
at $1750 respectively.
Nikon has just released its newest interchangeable lens
camera designed to make-up for the shortcomings of its predecessors – the Nikon
1 V3.
The camera offers an 18.4MP CMOS sensor with no low-pass
filter, a new EXPEED 4 processing engine, a fast autofocus system offering over
170 focus points when shooting. To be specific, the V3 has 105 focus points
when using phase-detection and 171 points when using contrast-detection.
The V3 also provides consumers with one of the industry’s
fastest high-speed continuous shooting with AF tracking at 20 frames per second
and up to 60 frames per second when focus is locked. The camera also comes with
a tilt-able 3-inch LCD touchscreen display, Wi-Fi and a revamped user interface
taken from Nikon’s DSLR line.
The Nikon 1 V3 will be available this April for $1200 with a
10-30mm kit lens, viewfinder and grip. Nikon will also be offering an optional
70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 zoom lens for $1000.
Fujifilm has stayed true to its word when it announced today
its latest ILC offering – the X-T1, which was shown last week as a teaser image
on the company’s X-series mini site.
The Fujifilm X-T1 boasts a durable die-cast magnesium body
with dust and water resistant features. The camera has approximately 80 points
of water sealing that ensures users of worry-free use on moist and dusty
environments. It is also freeze resistant up to -10 degrees Celsius and packs a
tempered glass panel to protect its LCD panel from the elements.
The camera also incorporates the company’s newly developed
electronic viewfinder (EVF) that features high magnification ratio and fast
display speed. The camera’s viewfinder offers wide-angle views (diagonal 38°
and horizontal 31°), the world’s highest viewfinder magnification ratio at
0.77x and a display speed with a lag time of around 0.005 seconds.
Aside from a weatherproof body and fast EVF, the X-T1 also
features a newly designed graphic user interface (GUI) on the viewfinder that
provides a new shooting experience with easy-to-read information about the
camera’s current settings.
The X-T1 also uses Fujifilm’s X-Trans II sensor that is able
to correct and enhance images even without the use of an Optical Low Pass
filter. Moreover, it uses a Lens Modulation Optimizer for interchangeable lens
cameras in order to further improve image quality.
The camera also prides itself with its fast autofocusing
system thanks to its sensor and EXR Processor II working together that enable
the camera to focus in under 0.08 seconds, start-up at 0.5 seconds, reduce
shutter time lag to 0.05 seconds and lower shooting interval in MF mode to 0.5
seconds.
Fujifilm has also added a number of enhanced wireless
functions including a free Camera remote application and Wireless Communication
function (via Wi-Fi) that allows users to remotely shoot images from
smartphones and tablets.
On top of it all, the X-T1 will come with a multitude of
optional accessories including a vertical battery grip, four dedicated flash
models, a leather case, hand grip, M Mound Adapter for additional lens compatibility,
protector filters, remote release, stereo microphone, DC coupler, AC adapter
and three new weatherproof lenses to complement its rugged nature.
The Fujifilm X-T1 is expected to ship starting February for
$1300.
