After its long and very expensive court battle against
Apple, Samsung is yet again facing another lawsuit this time from Microsoft, as
the Redmond-based company filed a case against the Korean tech giant at the US
District Court in the Southern District of New York.
Microsoft is asking Samsung $6.9 million to cover for unpaid
royalties. For everyone’s information, the two companies have signed agreements
in the past that allowed the two companies to exchange patents in order for
them to improve and promote Windows-based devices. In order to safeguard its
Patents, Microsoft stipulated that Samsung should pay a certain amount for each
Android phone it sells.
The partnership is in effect for seven years starting 2011.
It was smooth sailing for the first years but all changed when Microsoft completed
the acquisition of Nokia just a few months ago. Apparently, Samsung assumed
that Microsoft has breached their contract and delayed the royalty payments.
Microsoft says their case is strong and that they will be
successful. However, the company also mentioned that they still value their
partnership with Samsung and expects it to continue.
