Samsung’s recent patent applications may yet again point to
another wearable – by the looks of it a smartwatch. There have been rumours in
the past that the Korean tech giant is planning to release a standalone
smartwatch that is capable of making calls and send text messages by
itself.
Today, a number of patent applications filed with the US
Patent and Trademark Office by Samsung show what the company might be planning
to accomplish with regards to its wearable products – specifically with its
smartwatch offerings.
The watch described in the applications is supposed to
include a heart rate monitor, GPS, a camera and Bluetooth connectivity. But
unlike recent smartwatch releases from the company, the filed patents show a
watch with a circular face which looks a lot like the Motorola Moto 360.
There are also a number of patents that pertain to gestures
that control specific functions of the wearable. There’s one image in the
application that show how the device can be controlled using finger and hand
gestures that can be tracked using a reader at the back of the band.
However, there are also a few patent applications that cover
creating a connection between the device and a smartphone/tablet, which may
point that the filed patents may or may not have any relationship with the
rumoured standalone watch. Nonetheless, there’s a huge possibility that future
wearables from Samsung will make use of these patents.
