The dilemma of which material to use in the construction of
consumer electronic goods has always been lopsided in favour of more expensive
materials such as aluminium or Gorilla glass over the cheap feel of glossy
plastic. However, the economics of things have always affected the production
and marketing of goods – and the smartphone industry is no exception.
Take for example the Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer HTC,
who has long used top-notch components for its flagship devices. But ever since
consumers started paying attention to other brands who build phones out of
plastic, the firm now seems to be considering things as evidenced by rumours of
a plastic version of the HTC One M8.
Dubbed as the HTC One M8 Ace, the alleged smartphone is
supposedly designed to compete with Samsung’s Galaxy S5.
The phone will reportedly feature a plastic unibody design
similar to the company’s Desire
610 model. It will also pack a 5-inch 1080p display as well as a Qualcomm
Snapdragon 801 chipset with a 2.5GHz quad-core CPU, while the rest of the specs
will likely be the same as that of the original M8. With the metal body out of
the way, the One M8 Ace will cost around $480.
UPDATE:
In other news, HTC has also recently announced a special edition of the HTC One M8 smartphone that's heading to US carrier Sprint. This handset was produced in collaboration with popular audio equipment manufacturer Harman Kardon and as such should give Sprint consumers with an even better audio experience.
According to Harman Kardon's CEO Dinesh Paliwal, the technologies that they have incorporated into the One M8 should help in bringing back the highs and lows lost during the compression required for streaming music. They have also added a LiveStage feature that is designed to simulate multiple channels of audio, which is best used when viewing movies and other surround-sound media.
HTC and Sprint will also add a pair of Harman Kardon headphones in the package as well as six months worth of free Spotify service for those who will be getting the handset with Spotify's Family plan.
