Ultra High Definition video recording has really taken off
this past few months especially on the consumer side of things wherein
manufacturers worldwide has started announcing (and releasing) devices that are
capable of 4K video capture to ordinary consumers.
And it looks like the same is true for the business side of
the industry that are responsible for creating the UHD content that people will
ask for. So at this year’s NAB Show (National Association of Broadcasters) in
Las Vegas, manufacturers of camera and video equipment around the world showcased
their latest offerings that are capable of producing UHD (and above) media.
Blackmagic
URSA Camera
Blackmagic was one of the first brands that developed $4K
devices that can be used conveniently with its 4K camera. This time
around, the company showcased their newest 4K content creator – the Blackmagic
URSA.
The URSA packs a 10-inch 1080p flip-out display and comes
with two 5-inch monitors on each side, to help users check the camera settings
before shooting the video. There’s also a Super 35 image sensor which can be
upgraded when newer components come in.
The camera also comes equipped with an assortment of SDI
inputs and outputs, XLR mic jacks and a Canon EF or PL lens mount. The
Blackmagic URSA will retail for around $6000 with the Canon EF lens while the
PL lens will sell for $500 more than the EF-version.
JVC
4K Cameras
Another photo gear-maker that’s showcasing their newest
products in the market is JVC. During the event, the company announced three 4K
prototypes. First on the list is the GW-GBLS1 which comes with a Super 35mm
camera and is designed for use with aerial drones.
Then there are the GW-SPLS1 and the GY-LSX1. The SPLS1 comes
with a 13.6MP that is capable of recording 4K video to SDHC media. It also
comes with a 5 meter tether cable, a 7-inch folding monitor and a super 35
sensor used with a M4/3 mount.
Lastly, there’s the GY-LSX1 “Elise” which is a 4K
shoulder-mount camera equipped with the same Super 35mm sensor and PL lens
mount. The camera can record 4K videos up to 60p, and HD videos up to 240p for
super slow-motion.
The Elise record to SDHX, SDXC UHSI memory cards and comes
with advanced IP communications capabilities including remote control and
streaming.
AJA
4K CION
AJA, which is a company generally known for the production of
broadcasting equipment is also joining the 4K club with its CION camera. The
CION is a shoulder-mounted camera and features a 12-bit 444 ProRes recording.
It also comes equipped with an SSD drive and a PL lens mount.
The CION features a 4K APS-C-sized CMOS sensor with an
electronic global shutter and 12 stop of dynamic range. It can record 4K, 2K
and HD formats.
