Head-mounted wearables might have lost some of its appeal upon the arrival of smart watches, but it doesn’t mean that it’s completely out of the picture. Sony for instance has made its non-detachable Sony SmartEyeglass available for pre-order.

The SmartEyeGlass SED-E1 developer edition will be available in 10 countries coming next month for $840. The device is using holographic waveguide technology projected in 3mm AR lenses that puts images directly into the wearer’s eyeline.

There’s also a 3MP camera that can take pictures and videos. A separate module (that connects to the frame via cable) houses other components of the device including the battery, speaker, microphone, NFC and touch controls. Moreover, the SDK is already available for developers to play with.

Google has already signed a deal with Italian design company Luxottica to help give its smart HUD, the looks that will make less awkward to wear in public. However, we are yet to see a stylized Glass born from this partnership. Luckily the search giant has teamed up with one of America’s style icons – Diane von Fürstenberg which resulted in the creation of the DVF Google Glass collection.

The DVF collection consists of five new frames and eight new shades for those who want a bit of style in their headsets. The collection will be available to Glass Explorers in the US starting June 23 and can be purchased directly from Google’s online store or from Net-a-porter.

Google hasn't announced any details about its price but it’s a safe bet that it will go for more than $1500 which was the price of the regular Google Glass when it went on sale a few weeks ago. In case you don’t have the cash, the company’s Titanium collection will also be offered on June 23.

Google is making big moves this week for its highly anticipated wearable – Google Glass by first updating its software to a more tried and tested operating system and second, by offering it for sale to anyone in the US for one day.

This should mean significant changes to Glass Beta testers and those who are fans of wearable technology. For starters, the company’s switch from Glass XE to Android 4.4 KitKat should mean a number of improvements for the wearable. These include improved battery life and more reliable and easier upgrade procedures moving forward.

The update should also allow users to leave photo replies in Hangout messages (a feature that was only available previously if a user starts a new conversation) as well as improved photo sharing and organization.

The downside is that Google has decided to remove the voice call feature on Glass. According to Google’s Glass team, the decision to remove the voice call feature all boils down to statistics as only a small portion of all testers (less than 10%) were using it and that they will temporarily remove this functionality until such time that their team or third party developers are able to improve it.

Lastly, the move to switch to Android should make it easier for developers to build apps for the hardware, which consequently should help increase the number of apps available and compatible for the device.

Google is holding a one-day special offer to anyone living in the United States by making Glass available for purchase to anyone who’s willing to shell out $1500.

Google’s smartglasses are really one of those tech products that inspire innovation, but people still find it weird and unnatural to see other people wearing a chunky piece of eyewear walking in the street.

So, Google’s strategy is to employ designer brands to allow its Glass blend in better with eye wear that we’ve been accustomed to seeing. For instance, the search giant penned a deal today with the Italian design company responsible for the design and production of Ray-Ban and Oakley eye wear – Luxottica, in order to push Google Glass mainstream.

Details about the deal aren’t disclosed yet but both companies should benefit from each other’s strengths. On one hand, Luxottica’s extensive network of retail stores as well as their experience with designing eye wear that appeal to a broader audience would help Google get their smart glass to more people.

On the other hand, Google’s innovative technology applied into Glass should help further expand Luxottica’s consumer base by adding the production, design and distribution of smart eyeglasses with stylish designs into its portfolio.

At the moment, Google is offering a $225 upgrade to Glass for optional prescription lenses with titanium frames.

Tech heads with not-so-perfect vision would be very happy with today’s announcement regarding Google’s smart glasses.

The search giant is now offering a $225 upgrade to Google glass, which allows Google Glass Explorers to add optional prescription lenses. The unassuming lenses will be bound by titanium frames with four different styles – curve, thin, split and bold.

The Glass eyepiece is then attached to the frame using several screws. Google has also added two shades for those who want to take their glasses outdoors. Moreover, Google will also be working with an optical insurance provider in the US to offer subsidized frames and lenses to qualified consumers.

It seems the advent of wearable technology in the form of smart glasses is definitely closing in. Just last week, we saw the official launch of Vuzix’s M100 smart glass that brought the technology to consumers. This time around, another player is announcing its own smart glass.

Lumus, an American company that has made its name in the field of military-grade products for the US Air Force has just announced the DK-40 Dev Kit smart glasses. The glass is powered by Android and borrows some design cues from Google Glass. But unlike Google’s device, the DK-40 uses the entire right lens of the glass to project images.

The display offers a 640 x 480 resolution and is fully transparent. This combined with the 5MP camera on the DK-40 delivers a true augmented reality experience to consumers.

The smart glass is still in its early stages of development but it appears that Lumus may not at all get the device out in the market. Instead, it intends to promote the lens used on the DK-40 to OEMs and “select developers”. The Lumus DK-40 is expected to make its debut at next year’s CES in Las Vegas.

Google might be one of the biggest proponents of smart glasses, but a not so popular company has beaten the search giant when it comes to making a smart glass fit for public consumption.

Yesterday, Vuzix started shipping its Android-based smart glass – the M100, making it the first smart glass that is commercially available to the public. The device will retail for roughly $1000 and features a single, miniature LCD, a 5MP camera, a 1GHz OMAP4430 processor, 1GB of RAM and 4GB of on-board storage.

The 5MP camera of the M100 is capable of recording 1080p videos and has its own direct-on-board video capture processing that offers lag-free augmented reality. The M100 also comes with a 600mAh battery, a microphone, earpiece and a microSD card slot for storage expansion.

The smart glass can connect to a user’s smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth v4.0 or Wi-Fi. It also packs a number of sensors that detect ambient light, proximity and orientation. Vuzix sees the application of the M100 in different fields including industrial, medical and retail.

Vuzix also added that the M100 will come with a number of pre-installed apps and will be compatible with thousands of existing Android apps. Finally, the company says the smart glass will be delivered to consumers in a span of two to four weeks.
