Canon has just unveiled a new type of camera that can potentially bring photography to new heights. The company’s new ME-20F-SH is a full-frame camera with a sensor whose pixels are arranged over a 19µm square giving the camera superb performance in low-light conditions.

To be more precise, the camera’s ISO range tops at 4,000,000. Yep, you read it right, six zeros, which is exceptionally higher even compared to high-end models currently in the market. This means that the ME-20F-SH will be capable of capturing images and videos even in conditions with only 0.005 lux of brightness (that’s like shooting on a clear night with no moon).

Design-wise, the camera looks pretty unconventional in contrast to typical DSLR and compact system cameras in the market. The ME-20F-SH look boxy though it contains an impressive slew of features and ports including HDMI, a 2.5mm stereo mini-jack and a round 8-pin RS-422 jack.

Luckily, the camera works well with Canon’s SLR and EOS lines, which further extends the night-time performance of the camera by coupling the device with different types of lenses. Canon is saying the camera is a multi-purpose one but it will likely be used in certain niches like night-time surveillance and wildlife photography among others.

The Canon ME-20F-SH will be available starting this December for a cool $30,000.

Canon is starting 2015 with some major announcements for its PowerShot and EOS lines, including two new point-and-shoot units and three new DSLR models.

CANON REBEL T6s and T6i

Leading the announcement is the Canon Rebel T6 and T6i. Both DSLR models feature a 24.2MP sensors complimented by DIGIC6 image processors.
The camera will also have a 5 fps continuous shooting mode and a maximum ISO of 25600 and a LCD panel at the top that shows users basic configuration such as ISO and exposure compensation. Other notable features of the camera include Wi-Fi, high dynamic range movie recording and servo autofocus for shooting in burst mode.

Moreover, both models have autofocusing embedded in the pixels and color tone detection. Both models will be available starting April, with the Rebel T6i to sell for $750 for the body only ($900 with a standard 18-55mm kit lens and $1100 for the 18-135mm lens) while the T6s will go out for $850 for the body only.

CANON 5Ds and 5Ds R

Another exciting announcement this week was the company’s newest flagship DSLR cameras – the Canon 5Ds and 5Ds R. Both models are sporting a 50.6MP full-frame sensor that’s complimented by a Dual DIGIC 6 image processor.

There’s also a 3.2-inch fixed LCD at the back of the device, a 61-point autofocus system, an overhauled body to minimize shake and improve stability, built-in time lapse feature and a view finder that can cover nearly 100 percent of the field of view.
The cameras can record 1080p videos at 24,25 and 30fps. It also has a USB 3.0 port as well as support for CF and SD cards. Native ISO on both cameras maxes out at 6400.

The difference between the two models is that the 5Ds R does away with a low-pass filter effect and creates a cancellation effect designed to reduce blur from images and make them sharper.

Both models will be available starting in June with the Canon 5Ds to be priced at $3700 (body only) while the 5Ds R to be sold at $3900. Canon is also making available a new lens to go with the 5Ds and 5Ds R – the 11-24mm f/4L USM ultra wide-angle, aspherical lens which will cost $3000 once it launches towards the end of this month.

CANON EOS M3

Of course the party wouldn’t be complete without a mirrorless camera model. And finally, Canon is ready to up its game in this segment of the market with the new EOS M3. The new model offers a 24MP APS-C sensor with a DIGIC 6 image processor that should deliver premium quality image and video.

It has a fast autofocus system with 49 focus points, an ISO range of 100-25600 and a 3-inch articulating LCD panel for selfie fans. And unlike previous EOS M models, the new M3 comes with a built-in pop-up flash. This allows the hot shoe to be used with an optional electronic viewfinder. The new M3 is also capable of recording 1080p videos at 30fps and comes with built-in Wi-Fi.

It looks like this year’s CES is more of a showcase of product updates rather than of new products. Take for example Canon who has introduced several camera and camcorder models many of which are packing Wi-Fi and NFC.

Heading the announcements is the Canon PoowerShot SX350 HS with a 50x optical zoom lens (24-1200mm, 35mm equivalent). It also comes with a 16MP sensor that is capable of capturing Full HD content and delivers high-speed autofocus and zoom framing assist. The SX350 HS will be joined by the PowerShot SX710 HS and SX610 HS that will have a 30x and 18x optical zoom lens respectively.

The SX350 HS will be sold for $430, while the SX710 HS and SX610 HS will sell for $350 and $250 respectively.

On the camcorder side, Canon introduced four new models under its Vixia range – the HF R42, HF R40, HF R400 and HF G20. The HF R42, R40 and R400 all pack a 53x advanced zoom lens, a DIGIC IV image processing engine, a 3.28MP full HD CMOS image sensor and support for capturing HD MP4 videos at up to 35Mbps and AVCHD progressive 60p videos up to 28Mbps.

All three models are also capable of accessing the web through Wi-Fi. The camcorders will be available by March with pricing to start at $300 for the R400, while the R40 and R42 will retail for $400 and $500 respectively.

For a much steeper price tag, the Vixia HF G20 packs more oomph with 32GB of onboard storage compared to the 8GB on the first three models, 10x optical zoom, 12 hours of full HD recording and an enhanced HD CMOS PRO image sensor. It also features a high-resolution 922-dot 3.5-inch touch panel and Canon’s SuperRange Optical Image stabilizer.

The Vixia HF G20 will be available next month with an estimated price of $1099.

Now if you’re wondering why Canon is putting heavy focus on Wi-Fi connectivity in its latest products; that’s because they are also launching a media station called the Canon Connect Station CS100.

Basically, the Connect Station is a networked attached storage for all the videos and photos you’ve captured with your Canon camera. The box sports 1TB of storage, Wi-Fi, NFC and a wireless remote. It also comes with SD and CF card slots as well as a USB and an Ethernet port.

It also sports an HDMI port so you can connect it to your TV and browse all the images and videos in your collection. Moreover, Canon says the station uses a user interface that automatically organizes user content depending on shooting date, camera type and custom albums.

The device is expected to go on sale around June of this year for around $299.

Canon is introducing several new camera models in the Philippines that will target various segments of the market including entry-level users as well as power users. The new models include the PowerShot N2 and the SX60HS.

The PowerShot N2 is an update to last year’s N model and targets the young selfie generation with its LCD screen that can tilt 180 degrees. Just like its predecessor, the N2 has several features for its very social-savvy target consumers. These include preloaded filters, a Smooth skin feature for that perfect selfie and Wi-Fi and NFC capability for more convenient sharing of photos.

In terms of hardware, the N2 sports a 16.1MP, 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor that offers an ISO range of 100-3200, a f3.0 aperture and a shutter speed of 1-1/2000 sec. There’s also built-in flash and support for Canon’s iMage Gateway and CameraWindow app.

Then there’s the PowerShot SX60 HS superzoom camera. The device is joining the SX-line we saw last July and features an f/3.4-6.5 lens that achieves 65x optical zoom. The camera sports a 16MP 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor that offers an ISO range of 100-3200 and a Digic 6 image processor.

The SX60HS also comes with a newly developed grip design, a lens-shift type image stabilization complemented by an Intelligent IS function that analyzes camera movement to determine the appropriate image stabilization method, a 920k-dot HD LCD viewfinder that swivels and tilts for greater shooting flexibility.

Finally, there’s the PowerShot G7X which was first unveiled at Photokina just last month in Germany. Both the cameras are now on sale in the Philippines at open prices. Canon has set initial production at around 40,000 and 50,000 units per month for the G7X and SX60 HS respectively.

Photokina is now in full swing. So of course the biggest names in the camera industry have started taking the wraps off its newest imaging products. Canon is definitely one of them. In fact, its recently announced EOS 7D Mark II was one of the biggest announcements at the event.

And although the 7D has got a lot of people excited, it’s not a product that appeals to a broad audience. Consumers who are looking for a more compact and a more user-friendly camera without compromising performance will be excited with the announcement of the G7 X.

In the looks department, the G7 X is really simple and unassuming. It has a 1-inch 20.2MP BSI CMOS sensor which when partnered with a Digic 6 image processor and a 24-100mm equivalent f/1.8-2.8 lens allows the camera to produce sharp and high-quality images.

At the back of the camera is a 1.04M-dot 3-inch touchscreen panel that flips up to 180 degrees making it perfect for selfies. The G7 X also has a 31-point AF system that gives it the ability to shoot continuously at 6.5fps.

Other notable features of the G7 X include Full HD video recording at 60fps, a built-in ND filter, Wi-Fi, NFC and a pop-up flash. Canon will be offering the G7 X starting next month at $700.
