Barely 6 months after the announcement of the Xperia Z4 in Japan, Sony has now unveiled a new family of Z phones at Berlin this week. The company’s new Xperia Z5 comes alongside a compact version and a Premium variant that packs a 4K display.

Meanwhile, the Xperia Z5 compact goes with a 4.6-inch display with 720p resolution at 323ppi. It has the same Snapdragon 810 chip and Adreno 430 GPU inside but the RAM has been reduced to 2GB. Lastly, there’s Xperia Z5 Premium with a 4K Triluminos IPS display with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels at 806ppi. It also comes with a 1/2.3-inch Exmore RS sensor that churns out 23MP stills. Furthermore, the camera is partnered with an f/2.0 lens and a number of software helpers including Intelligent Auto Mode and SteadyShot technology.

The camera on the front of the device is a 5MP Exmor R sensor and has a 25mm wide-angle lens, so you can get more people in a single frame when taking a wefie. Sony has also invested in audio for the Z5 premium with High-res audio and DSEE-HX.

Just like in the other Z5 models, the Z5 Premium comes with a Snapdragon 810 chip and gets 3GB of RAM and 32GB of on-board storage. The handset also has a fingerprint sensor and is IP68 certified with cap-less ports.

So you might be thinking that the Xperia Z3 is no longer receiving any love from Sony after the announcement of the Xperia Z4 in Japan last month. But Sony is pulling a surprise by announcing a minor update to the Z3 with the Z3+.

The new model is touting the same 5.2-inch Full HD display as the rest of the Z3 gang (and that means the Triluminous display technology and X-reality for mobile as well). In terms of the internals, the Z3+ gets an updated Snapdragon 810 chipset with an octa-core processor, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of on-board storage.

There’s also a 2930mAh battery, which Sony promises to deliver up to 2 days’ worth of battery life. The handset will still get IP65/IP68 certification as well as the base Z3’s main camera, which is a 20.7MP Exmor Sensor with a 25mm f/2.0 lens. The front selfie camera has been upgraded though to a 5MP one with the same 25mm lens.

The camera’s software include SteadyShot with Intelligent Active mode, HDR modes both for photo and video, and ISO range that tops at 12800 and Superior Auto scene recognition. The camera can also capture 4K video (3840 x 2160) and you can playback any video you’ve captured on to a 4K TV using an MHL 3.0 connector.

The Xperia Z3+ will run on Android 5.0 Lollipop and will be available in four different colours: copper, black, white and aqua green. There’s no word yet on pricing and exact shipping dates but Sony did mention that it plans to launch the phone officially in June.
