CES 2016: Misfit Ray and Specter

While other fitness tracker makers like Fitbit are trying to focus on creating improved version of traditional fitness-focused wearables, Misfit is trying to expand its horizons by creating fitness trackers in a different form factor. In fact, the company has announced two new products at CES last week that somehow deviates from the typical fitness trackers are currently found in the market.

On one hand, we have the Misfit Ray – a wristband fitness tracker that doubles as a fashion accessory. The device features a tube-shaped aluminum where the electronics (Including the LEDs) are housed and a flat band made of rubber or leather.

Just like other products from the manufacturer, the Ray is able to track different data including steps, calories burned, distance, swim laps and sleep patterns. According to Misfit, the device is able to last for up to six months on a single charge and is waterproof up to 50 meters.

The aluminum tube is touch-sensitive which activates the LED display once tapped. The Ray is also able to convey smartphone notifications like incoming calls, messages and reminders using LEDs and a vibration motor.

The Misfit Ray is available in either rose gold or carbon black and can be had with either a rubber band for $99 or a leather one for $120. Just like the Misfit Shine, the Ray can also be worn as a necklace. Misfit is now offering the device for pre-order and will ship in the next couple of months.

Another product that was announced during CES was the Misfit Specter, a pair of activity tracking wireless headphones.

In terms of form factor, the Specter has the same design as most headphones intended for use in the gym. It has a pair of in-ear headphones, a small clip-on base and a cord remote with music playback buttons. The small square contains the sensors and the battery which according to the company can last up to 8 to 10 hours per charge.

Just like the Ray, the Misfit Specter is able to track various activities including steps, activity and even sleep pattern (assuming the device is worn by the user during sleep). The Specter is using audio drivers from Chinese manufacturer 1More, which ensures that they give off quality sound.

There’s no specific date on which the headphones will start shipping but the price is expected to be around $200.
