IFA’s just around the corner and as expected, we’re seeing
an influx of product announcement once again from different manufacturers. This
week, it’s Samsung’s new Tizen-powered smartwatch.
The last Gear watch that we saw was from last
year, which featured a curve glass face that looks very futuristic. Samsung
has decided to veer away from this design language and go back to something
that is more easily recognizable.
The new Gear S2 smartwatch features a round face and a
classic design that looks unmistakably like a typical analog watch. The device
has a rotating bezel and comes with IP68 certification.
Just like its main competitor, the Apple Watch, the new
Samsung Gear S2 will come in more than one flavor. There will be a base model
that comes with a silicon band and a classic model that will go with a leather
band.
Both models will have similar specs, namely: a 1GHz
dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. The display on
the device measures at 1.2 inches and boasts a resolution of 360 x 360 pixels.
The display is fully circular and of the AMOLED variety.
In terms of connectivity and battery, the Samsung Gear S2
packs Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.1, NFC and a 250mAh battery, which
according to Samsung will last for up to 3 days of regular use. There’s also
going to be a 3G version of the watch that will have a 300mAh battery.
No word yet on pricing and availability, but we’ll know soon
enough when both models make an appearance on Samsung’s booth at IFA this week
in Germany.
