Sonim has long been in the production of rugged smartphones.
Today the company has announced its first model that combines durability and
inter-connectivity. The Sonim XP7 is the company’s first smartphone with LTE
connectivity on-board.
The phone is quite small with a 4-inch WVGA display, which
can be operated even while wearing gloves. It features a Qualcomm Snapdragon
400 chip with a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in
storage. There’s also an 8MP camera at the back and a 1MP selfie camera at the
front.
As the XP7 is built to be a tough phone, the device features
military-grade protection including IP68 certification allowing it to be
submerged in 6.5 feet of water for half an hour as well as dirt, mud, sand and
dust-proofing.
The 4800mAh battery is said to provide 1000 hours of standby
time and around 40 hours of talk time. There’s also a 19mm audio speaker that
can churn out audio up to 103dB. The Sonim XP7 is being offered through an
Indiegogo campaign for $578 and will be available by March 2015.
