We’ve already seen curved displays for smartphones
and TVs,
but we haven’t seen one that can be folded like a piece of paper. That is until
last week, when Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (SEL) showcased a foldable OLED
panel at the Display Innovation 2014 Tradeshow in Japan.
The company showed two demo units. On one hand there’s an
8.7-inch panel that can fold into three. It has a resolution of 1920 x 1080
that translates into a screen density of 254ppi and supports touch. On the
other hand, there’s a smaller 5.9-inch panel with 720p resolution and is
non-touch.
According to SEL, the 8.7-inch display can be folded over
100,000 times and can be bent to a curvature of up to 2mm and 4mm radius.
However, the company hasn’t provided any details on how it plans to move
forward with the technology but the most probable application would be in the
smartphone and tablet market.
