Oppo Raises the Bar for Smartphones with N3 and R5

Oppo’s big event in Singapore kicked off a few minutes ago and just like what many people anticipated; the Chinese manufacturer unveiled two of its newest smartphones – the Oppo N3 and R5.

The Oppo N3 is built around a 5.5-inch display with a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels that equates to a screen density of 403ppi. The innards is composed of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chip with a 2.3GHz quad-core processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, a fingerprint scanner at the back and an LTE radio.

But the star feature of the N3 is of course its rotation camera. In contrast to its predecessor, the N3 packs a bigger 1/2.3-inch 16MP camera that comes with a motorized mechanism that automatically flips the camera when a special mode is selected and Schneider Kreuznach-certified lens. Oppo has also incorporated a number of software enhancements to the N3’s camera including horizontal and vertical panorama modes, Ultra Macro mode, Tracking focus, slow shutter and the ability to capture images in RAW format.

The Chinese tech firm is also introducing an accessory called the O-Click 2.0 that can be used as a remote shutter for the N3’s rotation camera, play music or take phone calls. The 3000mAh Polymer battery on the device also features the company’s proprietary VOOC mini rapid charging technology that can charge the phone’s battery from 0-75% in just 30 minutes.

Then there’s the Oppo R5, which trumps the Gionee S5.1 for the record of being the world’s thinnest smartphone. Compared to the S5.1’s 5.1mm waistline, the R5’s profile measures at a jaw-dropping 4.85mm bound by an aluminum “Micro Arc Frame”.

The display is 5.2 inches diagonally and offers Full HD resolution with a screen density of 423ppi. Under the hood, there’s a Snapdragon 615 chipset with 1.5GHz octa-core processor, Adreno 405 GPU and 2GB of RAM. Oppo has also incorporated special cooling elements made from liquid-metal and phase-change materials for efficient temperature management.

At the back of the R5 is a 13MP Sony IMX214 sensor with an f/2.0 aperture while a 5MP snapper is placed up front. The R5 packs a 2000mAh battery, which just like the N3 features VOOC mini rapid charge tech support.

Both phones will be available early next year with the N3 selling for $649 while the R5 will retail for $499.
