IFA 2014: Zenbook, Zenwatch, EeeBook and the MeMOPad


IFA, Europe’s biggest tech show is now in full swing and the gadgets are pouring like crazy. Asus for instance has announced a plethora or devices at the event including a two new laptops, a smartwatch and a tablet.

First up is the Zenbook UX305, an all-aluminum Ultrabook with a 13.3-inch display featuring a resolution of 3200 x 1800 (~276ppi) baked in a 12.3mm thick body. Just like its predecessors, the UX305 prides itself with clean and elegant design including the Zenbook’s signature metallic-ripple finish.

The laptop will be offered in two color options – Obsidian Stone and Ceramic Alloy as well as two SSD storage configurations (128GB/256GB). Unfortunately, this model loses the touchscreen display. In terms of other specs, all we know is that it will have an Intel Core M processor and will get around 10 hours of juice from its battery.

If you’re on seriously tight budget, there’s also the Asus EeeBook X205 which has a suggested retail price of just $199. The laptop will be powered by a quad-core Intel Atom Bay Trail processor and will be equipped with 2GB of RAM and either 32GB or 64GB of built-in storage complimented by OneDrive and Asus WebStorage.

The X205 has an 11.6-inch display that has a 1366x768 resolution. There’s also a VGA camera, a microSD card slot, a micro-HDMI port and a 38Wh battery, which according to Asus will last up to 12 hours of usage.

Asus is also updating its 7-inch MeMO Pad tablet. It features a new Intel Atom chip with a 64-bit 1.83GHz quad-core processor. The slate’s display has a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels that equates to a screen density of 323ppi.

The new MeMOPad also comes with 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage that can be expanded through a microSD card, up to 16GB of cloud storage and a 5MP+2MP camera combo. The tablet will be offered in three different color options – red, gold and black and will retail starting at $260.

Finally, there’s the new Asus Zenwatch. The wearable is directly competing with Samsung’s Gear Live, LG G Watch and Motorola’s Moto 360 in the Android Wear battle field.

The watch has a 1.63-inch AMOLED touchscreen display with a resolution of 320 x 320 pixels and is protected by a layer of curved Gorilla Glass 3. Under the hood, there’s a 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 chip, half a gig of RAM, 4GB of internal storage and a 1.4Wh battery.

There’s also Bluetooth v4.0, a microphone and a bio sensor to monitor a user’s heart rate. The watch is compatible with any 22mm band so you can match it to your outfit of the day. The Zenwatch also has IP55 certification giving it protection against the elements.

The Asus Zenwatch is expected to ship before the end of the year for somewhere around $260.
