Gionee Nabs Title for World’s Slimmest Smartphone

While manufacturers such as Samsung, Sony and Nokia are still battling for the title of world’s best camera phone, the distinction of making the thinnest handset in the market has been in the hands of Chinese manufacturer Gionee with its Elife S5.5.

This week, Gionee has outdone itself with the Elife S5.1. The company has shaved a few more millimeters from the S5.5 as this new model now bears a waistline of just 5.1mm.

The device is made from both glass and metal and bears a 4.8-inch AMOLED display with 720p resolution (~320ppi). Under the hood is a Snapdragon 400 chipset with a 1.2GHz quad-core Cortex-A7 processor, an Adreno 305 GPU, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of non-expandable storage.

There’s also an 8MP rear camera, a 5MP front-facing camera, LTE connectivity and a 2100mAh battery. The phone will run on Android 4.3 with Gionee’s Amigo 2.0 overlay. There’s no official announcement yet, but we’ll likely see one in the coming days.
