The effects of Microsoft’s acquisition of Nokia is finally
rearing its head. Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella just announced this week, that
the company will be laying off around 18000 people within the next year.
Of the 18000 expected job cuts, around 70% will be coming
from Nokia. Around 12500 employees of the Finnish company will be laid off
people mostly working as factory workers and IT professionals. Each employee
will be notified in the coming months.
Moreover, Microsoft’s chief of Mobile Devices Stephen Elop
also announced that the company will be shifting future Nokia X designs and
products to Windows Phone devices. Elop also added that Microsoft will continue
to provide support to existing Nokia X phones, which most likely include the
X2.
The Redmond company’s phone engineering and production
efforts will likely be concentrated in Finland with plans to produce low-end
Lumia phones using technology from the Nokia X models.
