Intel Tries its Luck with its own Instant Messaging App

Intel has recently announced a new product that’s quite different from what it’s traditionally known for. This new product is an app called Pocket Avatars that will soon compete with the already crowded market of instant messaging apps.

Pocket Avatars uses your smartphone’s cameras and other sensors to track your face and translate your voice and expressions into a 3D character or avatar in a video that you can send to your contacts.

The app is currently capable of recognizing gestures like nodding, blinking, sticking out your tongue and raising eyebrows. And Intel is promising that more gestures will be supported in the future including movements from the neck and shoulder.

Getting the app to work requires a lot of computing power so you can only send 15-second videos. Pocket Avatars is now available both on Google Play and the iTunes store with 20 free characters buy users can download 45 additional avatars for $0.99 each.
