All that hype about Android Wear might actually be the
groundwork for another Google project that will utilize the data collected by
the devices that will be powered by the wearable operating system.
According to a report by Forbes, the search giant is working
on a new health data service that will collect the data from wearables and
consolidate them in one database. The service will be called Google Fit and
will reportedly be unveiled at the company’s developer conference – Google I/O
this month.
However, the concept of having a data collection service for
health purposes isn’t something new for Google, back in 2007, the search
company launched Google Health – a
personal health information centralization service that allowed users to submit
their health records into a system that will consolidate them into a single
document for easy and convenient access in the future.
Although Google Health didn’t prove successful, it looks
like Google is ready to take the risk again with Google Fit. And the search
giant might be right in thinking that the market is now ready for such a
service, especially when its competitors are doing similar projects. Apple for
one, has just launched a similar platform called HealthKit back in WWDC while
Samsung already has the SAMI platform that works with its recently announced
SIMBAND modular platform for wearables.
