Back in March, Motorola announced its first smartwatch
powered by Google’s new Android wear – the Moto
360. Since then, the watch has received positive feedback from consumers and tech
enthusiasts thanks to its stylish and familiar design. However, the device’s
specifics remain shrouded as Motorola chose to be mum about the details of the
time piece. Well it looks like our days in the dark will soon be over.
Motorola is hosting a design face-off competition for designers
from the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada (except Quebec) and UK to create
unique watch face designs for the Moto 360. And surprise, surprise! The main prize
of the competition is none other than the smartwatch itself.
The big news here is that the contest has somewhat revealed
(or at least gave us some idea) on the price of the Moto 360. As with typical
competitions worldwide, the company hosting the event is required to disclose
information with regards to the value of the prize. According to the Prizes
section of the contest’s terms and conditions, the watch will have an approximate
retail value of US$249.
PRIZES: One (1) grand prize winner will receive a Moto 360 (ARV $249).* Actual suggested retail price at launch may be substantially different. Nine (9) runner-up winners will receive one (1) $50 Google Play gift card (ARV $50). Both the grand prize winner and runner-up winners entries may be used by Motorola in its sole discretion as a watch face for the Moto 360 and in any marketing, advertising and any other promotional activities by Motorola. The total ARV of all available prizes in the Promotion is $699.
The Moto 360 was previously rumoured to have a price tag of
around $340 after a French website posted that the device will sell for €249.
But it’s good to know that Motorola also gave a disclaimer in the T&Cs that
the ARV of the watch might be substantially different from its SRP upon launch,
so whether or not the retail price of the watch lands close to $249 remains on
the rocks.
Nonetheless, the price cut will certainly make the device a
bit more attractive purchase especially when competing brands such as the
Pebble Steel smartwatch ($249), Samsung Gear 2 ($290) and the upcoming LG GWatch ($310) command a higher price tag.
