Samsung has delivered on its promise to announce the
previously rumoured Android smartphone with a powerful camera – the Galaxy
K Zoom. The handset was announced a few hours ago at the Red Dot Design
Museum in Singapore.
The Galaxy K Zoom
welcomes a number of improvements over its predecessor. For starters, the
smartphone packs a 4.8-inch HD display of the Super AMOLED type. It also
boasts a more powerful chipset – an Exynos 5 chip with a hexa-core processor,
one comprised of four 1.3GHz ARM Cortex A7 and two 1.7GHz ARM Cortex A15 CPUs.
There’s also a Mali-T624 GPU, 2GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage that can
be expanded via a microSD card.
In terms of connectivity, the handset comes equipped with
Bluetooth v4.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n as well as NFC. As for design, the Galaxy K
Zoom also receives an upgrade with a more streamlined construction shaving off
a few millimetres from the camera module at the back. It also gets a few design
elements from the recently released Galaxy S5 – specifically the dimpled back
of the flagship smartphone.
But of course, the highlight of the camera’s specs sheet is
its camera. The Galaxy K Zoom sports a 20.7MP camera with a 1/2.3” BSI CMOS
sensor that is complimented by a 10x, 24-240mm F3.1-6.3 zoom lens with optical
image stabilization. The phone also comes with a xenon flash with a LED
autofocus assist. There’s also a 2MP camera at the front as well as a “Selfie
Mode” that allows users to utilize the rear camera to take self-portraits.
The Samsung Galaxy K Zoom will run on Android 4.4 KitKat and will be available next month in
three colours – black, white and blue for around $690.
