After giving us the 1 V3, Nikon has announced the latest
addition to family of interchangeable lens cameras – the Nikon 1 J4.
The J4 is meant to replace last year’s J3 and comes with an
18.4MP, super high-speed AF CMOS sensor with no low-pass filter complimented by
an EXPEED 4A image processing engine. The camera’s sensitivity ranges from ISO
100 to 12800 giving the J4 superior performance even in low-light conditions.
Nikon is also claiming that the J4 packs the world’s fastest
continuous shooting with AF tracking (a feat once claimed by Sony’s
Alpha 6000) at approximately 20 fps, and high-speed operation with a
shorter shooting time lag.
There’s also a new function for high-speed continuous
shooting called Active Selection in which 20 frames are automatically recorded
at high speed shortly after or before the shutter-release button is pressed.
The user can then choose among these 20 images which they like most.
The J4 is also capable of capturing 1080/60p videos and
comes with built-in vibration reduction function and advanced movie modes
including Fast Motion (records four times normal speed while playback time is ¼
the recording time), Jump Cut (drops one frame every other second for a
drop-frame effect) and Vine- and Instagram-friendly 4-second movies mode.
The back of the camera is where the 3-inch 1037k-dot LCD
screen with electrostatic touchscreen is located. The J4 also comes with
built-in Wi-Fi for easy sharing with a smart device.
Lastly, Nikon will create two specific accessories – the
WP-N3 waterproof case and the SB-N10 underwater Speedlight. The two accessories
enable the J4 to go underwater with the WP-N3 able to go to a depth of 45m
while the SB-N10 can go to a depth of 100m.
There’s no word on pricing and availability yet, but the
camera should go on sale at the same range as the J3 which was priced at around
$600 with a 10-30mm kit lens.
