Smartwatches like the LG
G Watch R and the Motorola
Moto 360 pride themselves in having customizable watch faces thanks to
their OLED panels. But Sony is taking this feat a step higher by creating a
watch that can change the appearance of not only its face but also its strap.
Known as the FES watch, the device is made by Fashion
Entertainments – an offshoot of Sony and is made entirely of e-paper. The watch
has a minimalist look and users can change the look of the device using the
watch’s 24 different faces.
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Sony
wanted to see how the device would fare on its own, without the Sony branding
to back it up. Well as it goes, it seems the watch was able to stand on its own
when it quickly reached its goal of 2 million yen (~$16,900).
Backers of the project will receive the device by May 2015
for around $170. Battery life for the FES watch is expected to last up to 60 days thanks to e-paper's low power consumption. The WSJ also reported that an e-ink bow may also be in the
works.
