As smartphones become bigger and bigger these days, it’s
beginning to look like that tablets might be losing their place in the consumer
electronics industry. Well, Intel and a certain Philippine manufacturer beg to
differ as the two launch a fleet of tablets that promises to deliver great
things to consumers from excellent multimedia experience to being productivity
powerhouses.
CloudFone made the announcement this week about three new
tablets all powered by Intel’s 64-bit (22nm) Atom chip. And run either on
Android only or in a dual-OS configuration running Android and Windows.
The first tablet that was introduced was the CloudPad One
7.0, which from its name packs a 7-inch display. It also comes with an Intel
Atom chip featuring a 1.8GHz quad-core processor, 8GB of on-board storage and
1GB of RAM. More importantly, the CloudPad One is running on Android 5.0
Lollipop, which the company promises will receive OTA updates within two weeks
of release of the latest version of Android for up to 2 years.
CloudFone is also targeting young professionals and possibly
students by releasing two new CloudPad Epic tablets that run both Android 4.4
KitKat that bring that rich multimedia experience and Windows 8.1 which
provides the productivity environment through applications such as Office 365
and other legacy software.
The two Epic tablets will have similar specs specifically a
5MP+2MP camera combo, 32GB of on-board storage and an Intel Atom chip with a
1.8GHz quad-core processor. The 7-inch version will have 1GB of RAM while the
8.9-inch version sports 2GB of RAM.
Then there’s the CloudPad Epic 8.0 that runs on Windows 8.1.
It runs the same Intel Atom chip with a 1.8GHz quad-core processor with 16GB of
storage and 1GB of RAM.
As part of CloudFone’s 4th anniversary, these
tablets will be offered on a discounted price. The CloudPad Epic 7.1 will be
sold at a retail price of PHP 4,999 (approximately US$112) from the original
price of PHP5,999. Meanwhile, the Cloudpad Epic 8.0 and Epic 8.9 will get a
PHP2,000 discount at PHP7,999 and PHP8,999 respectively.
