Thumby: An External Hard Drive Secured by Your Finger

Security is definitely a major concern these days, especially when a lot of us often hear news about hacking incidents, identity theft and digital espionage. With that in mind, a lot of companies are now prioritizing on equipping their products with a lot of security features.

Take for example this new product on Indiegogo called Thumby, a hard drive enclosure that utilizes the power of your iPhone’s Touch ID feature to protect your data.

In contrast to a typical HDD enclosure, Thumby utilizes hardware encryption as well as Bluetooth connectivity to provide a secure way of accessing your data. Users need to install their standard 2.5-inch SSD or mechanical hard drive into the Thumby enclosure and connect the device into your PC or Mac.

In order to provide an extra layer of protection, Thumby uses Bluetooth to detect if you’re phone is nearby and automatically unlocks your drive when you enter a specific distance range and locks the drive if you venture out of that space. Users can also require a Touch ID authentication before the drive can be accessed.

Thumby utilizes anodized aluminium in its construction that comes in a variety of colors including black, silver, gold, blue and pink. The device is now being offered on Indiegogo with a special early bird price of $129 with free shipping. At the moment, the product only supports the iPhone, though its developers are planning to expand support to the iPad, Apple watch and Android devices.
