HP just broke the news a few hours ago that it has decided
to split into two companies. The company has already filed with the SEC its
plans to separate its consumer-focused PC arm from its other business that
focuses on delivering enterprise solutions.
The PC-centric arm will continue to be known as HP and will
focus on consumer PCs, tablets and printers. This company will be led by the
company’s EVP for Printing and Personal Systems Dion Weisler. On the other
hand, the B2B division will be known as the Hewlett-Packard Enterprise and will
focus on software and services for businesses. The company will be led by
current HP head Meg Whitman at the same time acting as Chairman of the board
for HP.
Moreover, HP has announced that it is increasing the number
of layoffs from an estimated 45,000-50,000 to 55,000.
There are a number of speculations on why HP is doing this.
One of them says HP is splitting the company in order for them to easily sell
off its less profitable businesses like its PC-division.
