Qualcomm to Build Wearable-Optimized Chips by 2015

Smartglasses and smartwatches are everywhere these days and yet most of them still use watered down components from larger devices such as smartphones and tablets. Since the wearables are using components that were originally designed for bigger products, most of them are not performing at the optimum level.

Fortunately Qualcomm has realized the lack of wearable-specific components and has decided to build its own.  According to Qualcomm’s CDMA Technologies Taiwan President Eddie Chang, the company is now preparing for its own SoC and adds that Qualcomm has everything it needs for the new chip to be mass produced soon.

Qualcomm’s top competitor – MediaTek has already achieved quite a head start when it announced back in February the Aster a 5.4x6mm chip specifically built for wearables that integrates Bluetooth 4.0, a power management IC, and memory (4MB of flash and 4MP of SRAM).

The company hasn’t announced any hardware partners yet and there are no details about its specifications but nonetheless, it’s still good to hear chip makers working hard to bring better solutions for wearables of the future.
