Remember Titan Aerospace – that drone manufacturer that made
the news last month when reports broke out that Facebook is planning to acquire
the firm for use with its internet delivery program. But after Facebook announced its acquisition of
Ascenta – a UK-based drone manufacturer, the Titan Aerospace buy off went to
another buyer.
And surprise, surprise! It was Google who snatched the
company for an undisclosed amount, says a report from the Wall Street Journal.
The search giant will reportedly use Titan Aerospace’s drones to contribute to
its balloon-based remote internet delivery project called Project Loon.
The drones’ longer flight range and higher degree of control
should allow for Google to improve its internet network. Moreover, the drones
can be equipped with cameras that could help in its mapping initiatives.
Details of the acquisition remains under wraps but we’ll
probably see more information revealed in the very near future when Google
actually updates its Loon network with Titan Aerospace’s drones. Nonetheless,
this is more good news for (soon-to-be) internet users around the globe.
