Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai made a comment last Wednesday during
the closing of the Tokyo market that indicated the Japanese manufacturer’s
intentions to leave the highly competitive smartphone and television business.
According to Hirai, the company will no longer pursue sales
growth in the said market segments due to stiff competition from the likes of
Samsung, Apple and other Chinese manufacturers.
At the moment, there are no open deals for a sell-off, but
the company is allegedly considering an exit strategy. Once Sony unloads the
struggling units, Hirai said the company will then focus its efforts on more
profitable ventures including the production of camera sensors and its
PlayStation game console business.
